Champion Health Plan is committed to helping our members continue to receive needed health care during a disaster or emergency.

Current Disaster or Emergency Status

There are currently no special disaster or emergency notices affecting Champion Health Plan members.

If a disaster or emergency affects our members’ ability to access health care, Champion Health Plan will post important information and instructions on this page.

Your Coverage During a Disaster or Emergency

Special Medicare disaster and emergency requirements may apply when a qualifying disaster or emergency has been declared and the event disrupts access to health care in Champion Health Plan’s service area.

When these requirements apply, Champion Health Plan will:

  • Cover Medicare Part A and Part B services and supplemental Part C plan benefits furnished at non-contracted facilities, as required by Medicare;
  • Waive applicable gatekeeper referral requirements in full;
  • Apply the same member cost sharing for covered services received at non-contracted facilities as would apply if the services were received at a Champion Health Plan contracted facility; and
  • Make temporary changes that benefit affected members effective immediately, when permitted by Medicare.

What Is a Qualifying Disaster or Emergency?

For purposes of these special Medicare requirements, a disaster or emergency may be declared by:

  • The President of the United States under the Stafford Act or National Emergencies Act;
  • The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a public health emergency; or
  • The Governor of a state or U.S. territory.

A disaster or emergency declaration does not necessarily mean these special Medicare requirements automatically apply.

The declaration must also result in a disruption of access to health care in the affected Champion Health Plan service area.

How Long Do the Special Requirements Apply?

When the Medicare disaster and emergency requirements are triggered, Champion Health Plan will continue the special access protections for the period required by Medicare.

Generally, the special requirements continue for 30 days after all applicable disaster or emergency declarations affecting the service area have ended or expired, or until 30 days after the disruption of access to health care has ended, whichever occurs earlier, in accordance with Medicare requirements.

Information for Non-Contracted Providers

During an applicable disaster or emergency, Champion Health Plan will cover Medicare Part A and Part B services and supplemental Part C benefits furnished at non-contracted facilities as required by Medicare.

Affected members will receive the same applicable cost sharing as if the covered service or benefit had been furnished at a Champion Health Plan contracted facility.

Non-contracted providers should submit claims to Champion Health Plan in accordance with Champion Health Plan’s claims submission requirements.

Payment to non-contracted providers will be made in accordance with applicable Medicare requirements and Champion Health Plan’s applicable terms and conditions of payment.
